U Medvídků

U Medvídků

The “U Medvídků” building has a long history. The house was named after one of its first owners, Jan Medvídek, who founded the brewery in the 15th century. The brewery was in operation until 1898 when the newly-opened industrial breweries become impossible to compete with. That is why the small brewery U Medvídků was closed and rebuilt to one of the largest pubs in Prague. The “U Medvídů” house was derelict because of the Communist Regime in the 20th century. The house was reconstructed after the revolution in 1989. The last stage of reconstruction was finished in 2005 when the new brewery was opened.

The U Medvídků Brewery produces a very unique beer - they brew the strongest lager in the world. This lager is called X33. It is supposed to be the strongest lager in the world according to the extract of the original wort content (33° Plato). It’s got quite a lot of alcohol, too - 12,6%.

They brew more than just one beer, though. You can try OLDGOTT which is a semi-dark lager with 5.2% alcohol. The beer called “1466” is another lager - the name is derived from the founding of the brewery and its gravity is 14,66°. You can also try Růženka, a pink coloured top-fermented wheat beer.

How to get there

You can find the “U Medvídků” brewery and restaurant very easily - it is in the city centre, near Národní třída metro station. The problem might be to find the right taproom. In the “U Medvídků” house there is a large pub, it is a great pub with good food but they offer only Budweiser Budvar here. Don’t get me wrong, you should definitely try this beer as well. It is the real Czech Budweiser made in the city of České Budějovice (Budweis). And quite interestingly Budweiser Budvar (or Budějovický Budvar) is the only Czech brewery owned by the state. So after you tasted Budvar you should continue searching for the microbrewery. The microbrewery has it’s own (much smaller) restaurant where you can enjoy Czech dishes and the local craft beer. The best way to get to the microbrewery is through a hallway in The Palace Metro shopping mall which is situated on the Národní třída street (see the entrance in an attached photo). Just keep searching and you’ll find it eventually.
